Just because this album is bad by Metallica's standards, does not make it a bad album. But imagine this exact same album being released as another band's debut, in the same year, with the same musical climate, and people's opinions would have been totally different. For Metallica, this is a pretty bad album. I think I understand what the main problem is however. One gets the idea that Metallica were influenced in some way by the nu-metal bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s, that they themselves inspired in the first place. Whilst you can still tell that this is (at the heart of it all) a thrash metal band, a lot of the riffs seem to be slowed down just a little bit too much to give St. Granted, the lyrics don't seem to have had a huge amount of thought put into them, compared to earlier efforts ('shoot me again, I ain't dead yet', is not exactly the thought provoking chorus of all time) but you have to make allowances, I guess. For example, 'Shoot Me Again', 'Purify' and 'My World', all have the anger, passion and aggression that one would expect from a metal album. However, this may have worked in the record's favour, in that there are some tracks that I have completely overlooked before. it was difficult not to approach it with a slightly negative outlook. Anger however, was a different case, due to the amount of poor reviews it was given by fans, reviewers etc. Usually, I don't tend to let reviewers opinions influence my way of thinking about an album.

So after six or seven years of very sporadic listening, I decided to dust off the case and give it a listen. I also remember going back and listening to it, and not being as bowled over as I expected. Went and got hold of a copy, thinking: 'wow, I own an album by Metallica, this is cool'.
