This time around, humans have been made aware of both vampires and lycans, forcing both species to hide underground as they continue to wage their never-ending war with each other. It's refreshing to see her at the center of the action once again and Beckinsale doesn't seem to have missed a beat in slipping back into the role. Selene makes her triumphant return to the franchise after being absent from Rise of the Lycans. While news about a sixth film or the supposed TV series has been slow coming, it's almost inevitable that the series will continue in some form or another. Still, if you come to the screen knowing what the franchise offers - highly stylized action, a commendable commitment to the series' dense mythology, and a killer performance from Beckinsale - you'll be satisfied. After the fantastic sequel, Underworld: Evolution, the latter installments have varying degrees of success. The five-film series centers on an ancient war between vampires and lycans (werewolves) and the power struggles that arise between the feuding clans. Though the popularity of the action sub-genre has somewhat faded since its heyday, Underworld is one franchise that has proven to have some staying power.
Dark action films like Underworld, Van Helsing, Daybreakers, and I, Frankenstein share attributes so ingrained into their DNA that it's hard to imagine them without their stylized action, Gothic visuals, and dark mood. There used to be a time when you could barely step into a theater without seeing a poster or trailer featuring a brooding hero (or heroine) in a black leather trench coat beneath an ominous moonlit sky.
